Hi I'm using bluekenue and telemac2d as part of an undergraduate project, so I'm very much new to the software and a lot of the terminology. I'm trying to produce a mesh for a fluvial flood case and I need the section of the river to be fairly accurate in terms of element size. My point density is 5x5m but when i generate a mesh (specifying default edge length 5m and edge growth ratio 1.2) I recieve a mesh with element size far in excess of 5m.

Is there a way I can create my mesh so that the element size is much smaller surrounding the river? Also could somebody explain in terms specific to a river flood case what hardpoints, hardlines and softlines would be used for.

I know alot of this is referenced in the manual but it is all very generic and (with little knowledge) I find it difficult to relate them to my project.

Hello Pringle,

as described in the Manual under Point "2.2.3 The T3 Mesh Generator" the element size can be defined by the “default edge length” in the newT3mesh window (see figure in the manual).
Soft lines and hard lines/hard points can be used to conserve bank lines, dams, and other break lines of the geometry in the 3Dmesh.

Yes, but...

The size of the triangles can be controlled in many ways.

1. Default Edge Length (as suggested)

2. Fixed geometry: hard lines, hardpoints, the outline (if "resample outline" is turned off)

3. The Density object: To this object you can add any number children including:
  • pointSets. In this case the triangle edge length at any location in the domain is interpolated from the "z" values using an inverse distance algorithm
  • closed polygons. In this case the triangle edge length at a location is determined by the value associated with the containing polygon.
  • regular grids. In this case the triangle edge length at a location is determined by using a bilinear interpolation from the grid.
  • triangular mesh. In this case the triangle edge length at a location is determined by using a linear interpolation from the containing element of the mesh.


Note: When these density objects overlap the smallest value is always used.
