Hi all,

I've been using Telemac3D on triangular meshes for coastal applications as well as Delft3D-FLOW on curvilinear grids, for a long time. Recently, unstructured version of Delft3D-model came to open-source, but no mesh generator is available for it (https://oss.deltares.nl/web/delft3dfm). I wonder if there is a plan for implementing Delft3D unstructured meshes generation in Blue Kenue? The Delft3D meshes are stored in netcdf format, which I believe is already been supported in BlueKenue.

Kind regards,
Dmitry

I believe that the Delft3D FM GUI which allows for the generation of the meshes is freely available... although a little difficult to find the license request page. I would recommend sending an email to sales at Deltares to ask if licenses for the GUI are still available.

Just to clear things up and avoid confusion I was mistaken in confusing the free GUI release for that of the Delft3D GUI.

Thanks for your question. If I have a project that funds (i.e. supports) creation of such a new feature in Blue Kenue then it will certainly be added to Blue Kenue.

As a side note, NetCDF is like a bag that can contain many different things inside of it. Very similar to XML in which a specification is also required in order to make sense of the XML. In other words, what is put into the bag can differ from person to person. So, in some sense you are right, Blue Kenue can write a NetCDF file. But to say that Blue Kenue already has support for NetCDF is going too far at this point in time. Certainly the Delft3D NetCDF format would need to be described in detail (i.e. a link or a document etc.) for Blue Kenue to have any hope of knowing what to put into the bag...

Kindly,
Alan

Some years ago, a BETA version of Delft3D FM was tested at Flanders Hydraulics Research.

In order to compare results with Telemac, we would have liked to run simulations on the exact same mesh. We were however unable to reconstruct the node numbering and conectivity table (IPOBO and IKLE in selafin files) in exactly the same way. At that time Deltares was not willing to share their method of node numbering...

Maybe you can contact Sven Smolders to see if anything has changed since then.

Thank you for the information.

I have never met this person and am not able to send a message to them. Perhaps someone else has met this person and would be willing to chat about this topic with them (if it is appropriate)...

Kindly,
Alan

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for the discussion. It was very informative.
If I can put in my two cents, I think that RGFGRID mesh generator (which comes with the out-of-charge Delft3D 4 GUI package) is capable to read and write TELEMAC meshes, created in Blue Kenue. So I suppose it is possible to use Telemac meshes in Delft3d after conversion.

Best regards,

Dmitry

Well, I tried with Delft3D fm grid editor and imported the serafin file there, but I run the model, was fail during initializing process. I believe the reason related to orthogonality of the mesh and I tried several times, then I created a new mesh in delft3d which was similar to the one from bluekenue and it works fine. as far as I know, yes there an option to import telemac mesh to grid editor D3D, but i didnt see vise versa to convert D3D mesh to telemac.
