TOPIC: Oil spill duration

Hello,

I would like to include oil spill in my Telemac3D estuary simulation. I would like to find out if I can select the oil spill duration (start and stop time) or it will have to run from the beginning to end of my simulation.

Regards,
Chijioke.

Yes, you should be able to define the start and end time of the oil spill. I used to do oil spill modelling in 2D, but the 3D version is similar. Start with the tel3d user manual, however I believe the subroutine should be FLOT3D not OIL_FLOT as in the manual. OIL_FLOT subroutine is for the 2D version. You will need to:
- define your spill history (inject, remove, and location) in FLOT3D subroutine, and
- oil properties in a steering text file

To overlay the result particle locations with your 2D/3D results, I created a script to convert the particle location file to a BlueKenue pcl file (binary format). BlueKenue is able to load both your results files and pcl file so you view the locations of the particles. Not sure whether there is a better way now.

Thank you Hailiang.

This is very helpful. I would really appreciate if you can share the conversion script.

It was for a private project so I cannot share the entire code here. But you can crack it first and come back with your problems. You can also refer to this post for additional info: www.opentelemac.org/index.php/assistance...-tracers-and-drogues.

Hello Hailiang,

Please I would like clarification on how to include tracers (temp and salinity) with oil spill simulation.

I have temperature and salinity at one of my boundaries as prescribed in the steering file. However, I have seen from the examples that you are required to consider "soluble components of oil" as tracers. In my case, the number of soluble ... is 2. Please how do I combine this with my current setup/tracers.

I have attached my "steering file" and the "oil spill steering file"

Regards,
Chijioke

I am not sure whether you can combine other tracers (temperature and salinity) with soluable oil components, but you can try starting without any other tracers and gradually add more. Yes the soluable components are modelled as tracer. I used constant water temperature for oil simulation.

I understand you are modelling in 3D. I did not directly work with 3D oil spill. But I am assuming it is similar to 2D. In 2D, you need to define the oil tracers in your steering file (check C:\opentelemac-mascaret\v7p3r0\examples\telemac2d\riv_art). For an example FLOT3D.f, refer to C:\opentelemac-mascaret\v7p3r0\examples\telemac3d\particles.

Good luck!

Hi, could you figure out how to release between a time range?
I modified the IF condition to release between a time range, but it is just the last time step release.
It seems it doesn't add particles to the particles from the previous time step.

Hello,

Can you upload your steering file + Fortran files? Surely easier to help you.
