TOPIC: extract vertical data

extract vertical data 5 years 10 months ago #30874

Hi I have a question that seem quite stupid but I don't know how to solve it...
I would like to extract current data U and V along depth and time to compare it to ADCP measurements.

When I extract a profile on the velocity variable with bluekenue it seems that I have only the magnitude of the current not U and V nor the direction. So how I could get the information on the direction?
And the second question is that I can get the 3d currents but I don't know how to get simply the levels where they have been calculated. I can't do extract profile on the elevation variable which is however 3d...

Thanks a lot for your help
François

Hello François,

I don't have the answer for your question about the vertical profile of current direction.
For the 2nd one, I guess that you're using version 3.3.4 of BlueKenue. With the latest release (v3.9.5) it's possible to extract vertical profile of plan's elevation or tracer, which was not possible before.

I hope it helps.

Regards,
Laurent

Laurent,
Indeed I'm working with the v3.3.4, I will try the v3.9.5!
Once again thanks a lot! :)

It worked for the extraction of the levels thanks! :)

It remains just the question about the direction of the current if anyone has an idea?

Hi François,

The simple answer is, I only implemented support for extraction of scalar values along a vertical profile as that was all that was required for our in-house project at the time.

Sorry... Martin

Ok and I can not extract U and V separately?
how could I get the direction...?

You'll have to convince someone to add this functionality to BK or use some other SW.

Sorry... Martin

Ok, which SW would be the moste suitable if you have an idea?
Thanks

One possible, but time demanding way to do this is through Postel3D and QGIS.

If you load multiple horizontal transects from Postel3D, you can visualize the data in QGIS (PostTelemac add-in), with both U and V in the attribute table. From there on you can simply calculate the direction in the field calculator.

I can help you with the details.

I did some comparisons between Telemac output and ADCP data some time ago by converting the results file to VTK format for visualising in ParaView (www.paraview.org/). In ParaView you can easily extract line and plane profiles for any scalar or vector state variable.
There are various utilities available for doing the conversion (search the Forum). If none are suitable I have my own converter which runs on the Windows platform. It creates legacy VTK format files in binary or ascii format. I prefer my own version as it allows extraction of any part of the full mesh defined by an irregular polygon, rather than the entire mesh (visualising large 3D unstructured meshes can be very demanding on a desktop PC).
